Durban Retinal AssociatesDurban Retinal Associates

The main focus of our care is the surgery and medical management of diseases of the retina.

Our services include surgery for retinal detachments, diabetic eye disease, macular surgery (macular holes /epiretinal membrane removal).  We also treat Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) with Avastin or Lucentis. In addition to our interest in retinal surgery, we also perform cataract surgery. Many of the conditions treated will require laser surgery, but we do not perform any refractive eye laser surgery like LASIK, LASEK or PRK.

The trend in modern medical care is to develop sub-specialist interests, due to the complex treatments available today.  We do not therefore treat some types of problems in our practice, even though they may be eye problems.  Our reception staff may therefore guide you to other specialists if your conditions would be better treated by another ophthalmologist.

Examples of conditions NOT treated in our practice include pterygium surgery, corneal transplants, corneal cross-linking, LASIK, LASEK, PRK and squint surgery.  It is often useful to send a copy of your referral letter to us by fax prior to your booking, as this allows or staff to assess the urgency of your appointment and to assist with referral, if required.

We operate all day Mondays, Wednesday afternoons and Thursdays.  All patients are seen on the first day following surgery. Most patients who require retinal surgery will spend the first night in hospital, although in some cases it may be possible to performs the surgery as a “day case” and allow the patient to go home after surgery.

All cataract surgery is done as “Day Case Surgery”.

If you have been referred to our practice by an ophthalmologist outside of Durban, it is usually possible to have your post operative check up appointments done by your referring ophthalmologist.
